Having Some Pun with Staubitz Market

Animated GIF featuring a series of pun-based Staubitz Market signs, including one that reads “Hello? Is it Brie you’re looking for?” in bold yellow type on black — a playful nod to the shop’s artisanal cheese offerings.

Since 1917, Staubitz Market has been serving Cobble Hill as New York City’s oldest butcher shop. When we were invited to help bring their personality to the sidewalk, we knew it had to be as distinctive and inviting as the shop itself. After a few spirited “meatings,” we landed on a series of signs built around playful wordplay — messages meant to stop people in their tracks, spark a smile, and feel unmistakably Staubitz.

These weren’t just taglines; they were conversation starters. Each one reflected Staubitz’s personality — friendly, confident, rooted in tradition but never taking itself too seriously.

Seen from across Court Street or on a sandwich board out front, the signs did more than advertise. They invited people in, carrying a bit of Old‑Brooklyn charm right to the curb.

For us, it was a reminder that sometimes the most effective branding isn’t about saying everything — it’s about saying the right thing, in exactly the right tone. And for Staubitz, that tone just happens to come with a wink.
