THE NEWEST AMERICANS

Fall 2014 marked the beginning of The Newest Americans, a three-year longitudinal study at Rutgers University-Newark, the most diverse campus in the country, that documents the lives and communities of students attending the University. The project, spearheaded by Tim Raphael, director of the Center for Migration and the Global City, and partners VII, and Talking Eyes Media, focuses on the immigrant experience in New Jersey, with Newark as the point of convergence between the stories.

These stories manifest as a multimedia digital magazine, mounted gallery and museum exhibits, and public humanities events —engaging the public with thought-provoking discussion on advantages and disadvantages presented by the "majority minority country we are becoming."

Level Design brought years of experience and a unique creative eye to our motion graphics. The process from concept to mock-ups to execution was seamless and pain-free. From title sequences to logo animation, Level was able to translate our vision into polished visuals that beautifully represented our work.

LOGO ANIMATION

motion design, animation

We were asked to create an animation for an exiting logo designed by Creative Director Chantal Fischzang, and students Miriam Badie, Tiffany Hale, Eric Ng for the Newest Americans project. The logo references the global sphere, the city and its stories, and the vertical lines voice and sound.

The goal of our animation was to create a smooth logo reveal that emphasized these concepts through the kinetic behavior of the elements.

WE CAME AND STAYED

concept, design, animation

We were asked to design and produce the title sequences, on-screen graphics, and end cards for three of the first five films in the Newest Americans Volume I.

For the film We Came And Stayed we developed a title treatment that emphasizes the structure of the title, and therefore its tone, and integrates it into the Newark landscape. (In collaboration with Chantal Fischzang.) Watch the full episode here

American Sueños: Meet Marisol

concept, design, animation

We were asked to design and produce the title sequence, on-screen graphics, and end cards for the film American Sueño (Meet Marisol). We developed a title treatment that uses the behavior of the letterforms to communicate it’s message.

Typography softly fades in and continues to move through spacing of the letterforms creating space for new content. The idea of “sueños” is suggested by the feathering of the subtitle as it fades out. (In collaboration with Chantal Fischzang.) Watch the full episode here.

PLACE OF ENTRY

concept, design, animation

We were asked to design and produce the title sequence, on-screen graphics, and end cards for the film Place Of Entry. We developed a title sequence that reflects the film’s focus on layers of story and layers of experience.

The title of the film is revealed by “looking through”  three transparent panes. This references the glass books that are the films subject matter used to see history. (In collaboration with Chantal Fischzang.) Watch the full episode here
